Fishing Inside the Park

When we visit the park we see many fly fisherman fishing some of the rivers along the park roads. Fishing season begins on the Saturday of the Memorial Day weekend, usually the last weekend in May, and continues through the fist Sunday of November. There are some exceptions to this, so check your park regulations to see where you may and may not fish. Fishing in the park requires a permit for all people 16 years of age and older, plus regulations apply. You may purchase a 3 day, 7 day, or annual permit. Children 12 through 15 year old will be given a permit for free, however, he or she may only fish with an adult who knows the rules. You may purchase the permits at ranger stations, visitor centers, and the Yellowstone General Stores. State fishing licenses are not valid inside the park. You most also obtain a permit for using boats and float tubes. These permits may be obtained at the south entrance, Grant Village Backcountry Office, and Bridge Bay Ranger Station. For non-motorized boats, permits are available at Canyon, Mammoth, and Old Faithful backcountry offices, Bechler Ranger Station, and West and Northeast entrances. You must have a Coast Guard approved wearable life vest on board your boat.

The park concessionaire rents boats that you can take out on your own, as well as offers guided fishing trips on Yellowstone Lake. The fishing guides try to take you to the hot spots on the lake that day, so that you will have your best chance to catch fish. These guided trips and rental boats are offered at Bridge Bay Marina. For more information on these concessions see the information below.
