Jackson, Wyoming is often called Jackson Hole, however this is incorrect. Jackson is a town located in the Jackson Hole Valley. This valley, generally just called Jackson Hole, is bordered by the Teton Mountain Range on the west, and the Gros Ventre Mountain Range on the east. The Snake River runs through Jackson Hole, and along with the town of Jackson, the small communities of Wilson, Kelly, and Teton Village lie within the valley, as well as Grand Teton National Park, National Forests, and a few ranches. The tourist town of Jackson lies near the southern end of the valley. Jackson is the county seat, and with Grand Teton National Park just to the north, and Yellowstone National Park north of Grand Teton, the town of Jackson is used as a gateway to both parks. Because of its location, Jackson’s economy depends on tourism, both in the summer and winter months. Besides the National Parks, the area is popular for outdoor sports such as fishing, hunting, skiing, boating, and mountain climbing. Of the few remaining ranches, many also serve as guest ranches, offering horseback riding, and outfitting for hunters and fishermen.
