Houghton and other areas in the U.P. are known for a variety of
winter sports. With its long winters, generally heavy snow, and skii hills, Nordic Skiing, Cross Country sking, snowshoeing, and snowmobile riding, give both locals and visitors activities to keep them busy during the cold winter months.
here are a number of trails available in the Upper Peninsula for a variety of uses. Cross-country skiing can be found at Ft. Wilkins State Park, McLain State Park, and Porcupine Mountains. Cross-country ski trails are also available at Swedetown Ski Trails near Calumet.
There are also hundreds of miles of groomed snowmobile trails running through the Keweenaw.
In the summer a number of these trails and rural roads provide an opportunity for biking and hiking.
The warmer months also provide opportunities for boating and fishing. You will find a number of boat ramps available in Houghton, Hancock, and Chassell Michigan. Bring your own boat, or rent a kayak at Down Wind sports in Houghton.
