Ramada Waterfront: A Hotel Across the Waterway
Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet] |
The Ramada Waterfront is a full service hotel, located on the waterfront near the Lift Bridge. The hotel is two-story, and has 51 rooms. The Waterfront Ramada also has an indoor pool, sauna, and hot tub. The rooms contain a coffee maker, refrigerator, iron and ironing board, hairdryer, cable TV, and a safe deposit box at the front desk. Besides the standard rooms, you can select rooms with lake views, microwaves, or hot tubs. Although they advertise quite rooms, it is located right next to the Portage Lift Bridge (see photo 2), which is noisy, even at night. Since I have only visited this hotel, and have never stayed over night, I cannot guarantee that you will not hear bridge noise. Pets are not permitted.
Unique Qualities: Every room at the Waterfront Ramada has free wireless Internet access. A free continental breakfast is served each morning, and coffee is available 24 hours a day. There is a restaurant that offers lunch and dinner, and a lounge with a view of the waterway. The Ramada also has conference rooms available for meetings and workshops. In the summer you can enjoy outside seating and boat docks. The hotel is located on a snowmobile trail, if you visit in the winter.

McLain State Park: A place To Enjoy the Outdoors.

In McLain State Park you have the choice of staying in the campground, or in one of the small cabins. The Campground has 103 campsites with electrical service. Hot shower are available in the restroom building. It is recommended that you make reservations during July and August. You will also find Mini-Cabins at McLain State Park. These cabins will sleep four people and have bunks and mattresses. You must bring your own bedding. The cabins have electric lights, heaters, a hot plate, a table and chairs, plus a picnic table outside and a fire circle. You should call ahead and make reservations if you wish to stay in one of these cabins, as there are only six available. If you travel with a family pet, no pets are allowed in the cabins. For reservations in either the campground or one of the cabins called 1-800-447-2757
Unique Qualities: In the mid-19th century when the copper mining industry had developed in the U.P. a canal was dug along a Native American Indian portage route, completing the Keweenaw Waterway, which cuts through the entire peninsula. McLain State Park is located on Lake Superior at the north entry of this Keweenaw Waterway. This 417 acre park is located north along M-203 about 12 miles from Houghton between Calumet and Hancock. In the park you will find picnicking, hiking and bicycles trails, two miles of sand beach, playground equipment, and a boat ramp. If you have a Michigan fishing license you may fish from the seawall. If you are lucky, and know what you are looking for, you may find agates along the beach. The second picture shows a map of the park.
