San Elijo State Beach is located in San Diego County along Coast Highway 101 just north of Cardiff by the Sea, sometimes just called Cardiff. This is a sizeable beach, which is popular year long for surfing. There is also a nearby reef that is popular for snorkeling and diving. Summer brings people to the beach for picnicking and swimming. Although this state beach is located in an urban area, a large section of the beach sits below a bluff, hiding it from the town and traffic above. With near by towns of Cardiff, Encinitas, and Solana Beach, and within a reasonable drive from San Diego, there are numerous opportunities for shopping, museums, and engaging in city life. For a little information on these towns, and links to their information pages, see my General Tips. I have made a few suggestions for things to do in San Diego in my Off the Beaten Path tips. |
| Enjoy the Wonderful Sunsets |
| | Stand on a landing at the top of a high stairway, or take the stairs to the beach, and enjoy the California sunsets, as the sun drops into the Pacific Ocean. |
| The Pacific Ocean Along San Elijo |
| | After the sun slips into the ocean, light a camp fire, and enjoy the pleasant California evening. You may purchase firewood from a camp host, or bring your own, but gathering firewood is not allowed within the State Beach. Also, alcoholic beverages are not allowed outside of your campsite. |

| Pros: | "A large beach for walking, jogging, or enjoying water sports." | | Cons: | "In the area below the bluffs, a large portion of the beach is usually damp, as when the tide comes in it comes almost up to the base of the bluffs." |
