"Ski Jumping Continental Cup in Velenje" Velenje by Nykaenen

Velenje Travel Guide: 30 reviews and 57 photos

I went to Velenje to watch Continental Cup ski jumping competition. Even if you are not into that sport, it's an event worth seeing. There are two competitions: on Friday night jumpers compete for Pokal Celje and on Saturday night for Pokal Gorenje. Both competitions start at 21:30 (trial round at 20:00) and end around midnight. The competitions are quite spectaculous to watch as both the hill and the landing area are lit up, whereas spectators sit in the dark. Additional beauty to the event lies in the view of the old castle which is situated next to the ski jumping hill and is also lit up. After the competition there are fireworks followed by the prize award ceremony. In between the two runs there is a program for the spectators featuring local accordion players. Accordion is typical of Slovenia, but I myself am not particularly fond of it. Luckily, the break lasts only 15-20 min.

There's more to Velenje then just ski jumping, but 2 days is more than enough time to see it all. There's the already mentioned old castle (actually 2 of them, the other one is at the other side of the town and is a ruin), the mining museum, the lake area, the ski jumping complex in Mislinja (an absolute a must for anyone who wants to get a feeling of what's it like to jump). Don't expect much in terms of a nightlife - our local "guide" told us that they mostly go out in Celje.
