A view of Hotel Kvarner, one of the most famous landmarks of Opatija

At first there was just an abbey there (15th century). Hence the name Opatija = abbey. But the location was too lucrative to go unnoticed - Opatija has a very mild climate and is aboundant in vegetation. In 19th century several eminent doctors (Schrötter, Örtel, Glax,...) managed to persuade The Southern Railway Society to invest in their projects. Opatija soon became a well-known health resort and was especially popular among European royalty, polititians and artists.

Although the area of present day Croatia has seen many wars, Opatija itself suffered little destruction. That makes the whole town a sort of architectural museum.

Nice place Opatija! I was there twice and I'll be there again the next monts because I have a friend professional photographer in Kroatia.

Nice place to visit as a museum of 1900 tourism. A must for those who are fond of that style. Definitely not my cup of tea! Happy that there are so many visitors that enjoy !

What a wonderful untouched spot to vacation. So glad it survived all the other devastation. It looks beautiful. Shame about your first hotel.
