A view of Hotel Kvarner, one of the most famous landmarks of Opatija
At first there was just an abbey there (15th century). Hence the name Opatija = abbey. But the location was too lucrative to go unnoticed - Opatija has a very mild climate and is aboundant in vegetation. In 19th century several eminent doctors (Schrötter, Örtel, Glax,...) managed to persuade The Southern Railway Society to invest in their projects. Opatija soon became a well-known health resort and was especially popular among European royalty, polititians and artists.
Although the area of present day Croatia has seen many wars, Opatija itself suffered little destruction. That makes the whole town a sort of architectural museum. |
