My 1-year scholarship to the States included participation at a conference in Washington. The conference was scheduled January 14-15 and my ticket was bought for Jan 13-16, allowing me extra two days for sightseeing. For your better understanding of what Washington meant to me, let me tell you that even though I was language major at my home university, at FAU I was taking classes in US history and politics.
Washington = me, Nykaenen, visiting the city where IT ALL was happening.
I was arriving from Florida, the sunny state. The warmest clothing item I had with me in Boca Raton was jeans jacket. The search for sth more suitable began in my residence hall, but lol all I got were sympathetic smiles "Winter jacket? Are you kidding?!"
After about a week of asking around, a friend of a sister of a friend had a jacket more or less my size. The only minor flaw: it said "Miami Dolphins" on the back!!! But I was assured that in Washington there were no hard-core rivals of Miami Dolphins and that I would be safe ;-)))
The morning of January 13 (how well I still remember!) was another sunny and relatively warm Florida morning. That same morning saw one of the worst snow storms in the north of the USA. Rally and I learned it only when we arrived to West Palm Beach airport and saw all the delayed and cancelled signs next to flights to the north. Waiting halls were full of people like us, hoping that the situation would change. During the 6 hr torment we had 7 different re-scedules of our flight! Finally, we were called to board a direct flight to DC! Later on, in DC, we learned that our flight was one of the few flights landing there that day as soon conditions worsened.
