No trip to Rome would be complete with out a little trip into the coliseum. Having been to Rome many times before since 1982 I find it amazing how much it has changed around this area. The city has been doing a lot of work to make this an attractive area and to preserve the buildings. There is a large amount of peddlers of the traditional tourist junk in the area but do not bother buying around here. You can find better prices in some of the local stores.

Directions: The coliseum is such a neat place to visit. Make sure to look in all the nooks and cranny on you walk around the inside. Talk a lot of photos while you are there.

The steps are full of people all year round. Durring the summer months there are a large amount of flowers placed on the stairs by the city which makes it so nice. Many students sit here and draw all day long and enjoy the sun. This is a very good place to watch people. Take a look at some of the pictures in my Travelouge for more on the Spanish Steps of Rome.

The Trevi fountain is not what most people expect when they find it. It is in a little square behind some bigger buildings off the main street. This is why is always looks so crowded and always full of people. Do not forget to throw a few coins in the fountain to ensure your return to Rome. See my Travelouge for more pictures of the Trevi fountain.

Plaza Navona is a large plaza that has many street performers and artist as well as many sidewalk cafes. The artist here are all selling their artwork and most of it can be had cheap as long as you are willing to haggle with them. The street performers do some strange things here. We watch a man stand in the heat of the day all painted in white . He stood there for hours and hours and never moved, he was acting like a statue. We did give him a few coins as I know I could have never stood that long.

The city hall is a place where the laws of the city of Rome are administered. There is a wall where all of the marriage proposals are posted for the public to review. It is funny to see this and to think that if the public does not want you to be married they can stop you. (HAHA) The city hall is located at the end of the Fourm and makes for a good exit point as the bus stop is just at the bottom of the stairs.

The Pantheon (also known as S. Maria della Rotonda) is one of the most impressive buildings in Rome. The building was originally dedicated as a temple to the twelve Olympian gods. It was built on the top of an earlier temple designed by Agrippa in 27 B.C. which was destroyed in 80 AD which was then rebuilt by Domitian but then burned and was destroyed again in 110 AD. In 127 AD Emperor Hadrian rebuilt it. The original rectangular temple, consisting of sixteen single granite columns became the porch for the newly devised dome structure. This is the first such dome structure known and it is probably the inspiration for every domed structure built in Rome. The piazza outside the front of the Pantheon is known as Piazza della Rotonda

Castle Saint Angelo is known as the Mole Adriana and is the Tomb of emperor Hadrian. The castle has a fantastic panorama of the city of Rome that you should see. It was not originally built for defensive purposes but as the funeral monument of the emperors and in the 10th century it was transformed into a castle and fortress. It is built on a large square base and has circular towers at each of the four corners. The towers are known as the towers of St. Matthew, St. John, St. Mark, and St. Luke. The bridge that is in the front of the monument is called Ponte S. Angelo and has some beautiful statues along its arches.
