Where the Wild Things Are - Rurrenebaque

by Alisonchilla - last update: Oct 2, 2003

Recent Update

So recently, I discovered that I am playing soccer here in the states with someone FROM Rurrenabaque.

Quite a coincidence considering how small Rurre is and how few Americans have probably traveled there.

If you've got any questions that an ex-pat might be able to answer, send them my way and I'll ask Paula or her cousin Yuri for you.

Pampas

The more popular tour is a combination riverboat tour and camping trip to the pampas.

Go with Fluvial tours, they were pretty darn good. I bought my tour while in La Paz, and got a pretty good deal. Go to El Solario hostel in La Paz. They'll hook you up. This experience was contrary to many others I found, where it was cheaper to buy tickets on location. In this rare case, the price was the same in Rurre as it was in La Paz. It was nice to have our tickets beforehand, too, since there is no easy way to get money in Rurre. Bring what you need with you!

Selva - the jungle

While most people prefer the pampas tour because everywhere you turn you get to see wildlife, I prefered the jungle tour. The jungle tour is much more informative (if you speak Spanish) and feels way more like you are roughing it.

There is no way in heck I would wander off in those trees alone. All kinds of dangerous stuff abounded!

Ticks, spiders, snakes, jaguar, wild pigs -- you name it, and the jungle has it. Definitely check out my travelogue on this one. :)
Welcome to the jungle

In A Nutshell:"If you love nature, you must come!"

You are lucky that you may write your experience with the "Chanchos ", I can imagine the guide running... I must decide if I go to Rurre or to Iquitos, it is not an easy decision
