The Ukrainian city with the imperial spirit I visit Lviv in May of 2007 and I liked my visit very much. First of all I was quite lucky with weather. The second during my visit I had a feeling that I'm somewhere in Prague or in Austria and I like this impression. The first settlements date back to V AD. Firstly Lviv was mentioned in 1256. The founder of the city, Galitsky Duke, gave the name of his son to the city. In 1272 Lviv became the capital of Galicia and Volyin' Kingdom. In 1349 the city took by Polish Kingdom. In 1356 the city got Magdeburg law and the trade operations increased. Lviv several time was in sieges in XVII-XVIII century including Turkish and Swedish troops as well as Bogdan Khmel'nitsky Army. In 1772 in the first dividing of Poland, Lviv became a city of Austrian Empire and has name Lemberg. In 1918 Lviv was returned to Poland. In 1939 Soviet Army went to Poland and Galicia became the part of USSR. Since 1991 Lviv is a part of independent Ukraine. |

Freewayboz Sun Jan 25, 2009 15:21 UTC maybe it restaurant at club split Lviv | Nemorino Sat Feb 2, 2008 09:38 UTC That's a sad story about Ivan Fedorov, a man who was very much ahead of his time. (I read a biography of Ivan IV the Terrible last year because of the opera "The Tsar's Bride".) Too bad there was no performance at the opera house while you were in Lviv. | Raimix Fri Jun 15, 2007 14:42 UTC Very good page! City looks quite good, very historical one and makes me want to visit it someday ;) I guess (maybe) it is more beautiful than Kyev:) Raimis. | globetrott Fri Jun 1, 2007 21:13 UTC What an interesting city with great architecture and even a lot of Austrian influence. One day I hope to go there as well ! |
