German-styled city in Russia

We visited the city during vacation, in August of 2010. It was very interesting experience because the city is definetly different from other part of Russia that is related with German times in the past of the city. It was very interesting to walk around the city and we will return for new impressions one day.
The city was founded in 1255 by Teutonic Knights as Koenigsberg (the castle was built on Pregelya river). In Russia the city had a name Korolevets till XVIII century and since Peter I the Great times the city was named Koenigsberg in Russian Empire. In XVI-XVII century the city had 3 parts: Lithuanian, Polish and Prussian. In 1724 the city was joined in whole city. During Seven Years' War the city was taken by Russian troops in 1758 and was in the Russian Empire till 1762. In 1919 the first airport in Germany was open in Koenigsberg. During WWII the city was heavily destroyed in August of 1944 by bomb attacks of British airforce. Later in April of 1945 the city was taken by Soviet army and Koenigsberg (Kaliningrad since 1946) became the territory of USSR/Russia.

Excellent page, Andrey. I didn't expect to see so many relics of German past in Kaliningrad. Seems they did a lot of restoration and (re)construction works in the recent years.

Great page, Andrey! The city has changed a bit since I was there. The Christ the Saviour church is finished :)

Excellent page about this unique Russian city which still keeps its German origin. I visited Kaliningrad three times far ago in 1969, 1977 and 1978 and never since then... I well remember the Cathedral and the tomb of Kant. Dream to come back someday...

Molodec, xoroshaja stronica!:) Actually I would like to visit this place... The cathedral looks so unique in style, impressive. It is pity that not much left or wasn't saved, as city could be as beautiful as other German style places like Gdansk, Riga.
