Moscow has been in existance for eight and a half centuries. From a small settlement that dwelt among woods and rivers it has grown into the capital city of a huge country. The first chronicle record that related to Moscow dates from 1147 and this date is the counting point for the city's anniversaries. In the XIV-XV centuries after a keen rivalry with Tver city, Moscow became a core of Russia's consolidation and an organizer of actions for the liberation from the Tatar burden. In 1326, the residence of Russian Orthodox Church was relocated into Moscow from the city of Vladimir and here in 1380 the Russian army was formed that defeated enemies (the Tatars) in Kulikovo Pole (Kulikovo Field) battle. In XV century Moscow became a metropolis with a large population with merchants and craftsmen. At the end of XV century Moscow's Tsar Ivan III proclaimed himself "All-Russia Sovereign" and Moscow became a capital of Russia. That time Ivan III tried to build "3rd Rome" because Russia had many geopolitical claims. In 1613 Moscow's Boyar family, Romanovs, became Russian Imperial family. |
| | In 1712 the Russian Emperor Peter I created the new capital city, Saint Petersburg, however, Moscow presented the importance of single throne capital city, a valuable political, religious, economical and cultural center. All the Russian Emperor's coronations were held in Moscow. Moscow had a key part in Civil War I in 1812 when Napoleonic troops came into Moscow after the Russians decided to leave the city. When Napoleon was in Moscow there were great fires that were begun by citizens of the city and two thirds of buildings were destroyed. The fires were the reason of disaster for French becuase they hadn't enough food for all soldiers. Soon Napoleon left Moscow and Russia won the war. Moscow was re-built. Moscow became a capital again in March 11 1918, after Russian November Revolution. The city played a great role in USSR development. There was a great battle in December of 1941 and Russian troops stopped Fascists Army in WWII. After the war Moscow grew as a financial, cultural and tourist center. of Russia. A symbol of Russia is Red Square and the view in the picture is well known by every Russian. |
