The place of Stalingrad Battle I was in Volgograd with 3-days business trip. I didn't see much in the city and only one evening I had a walking in the city with my friends. Other evening we worked and only had a dinner. The city has very interesting situation, It is situated along the river and it is 75-80 km long! In the same time it is 3-5 km wide. Very interesting. The city was founded in 1589 with name Tsaritsyin and had the name till the revolution of 1918. In first years of the city it was the fortress in the south of Russian Empire to guard the borders. Since XVII century it became the trade center in the area as well. In 1925-1961 the city has name Stalingrad in honour of Iosif Stalin. Stalingrad is the famous place cause of WWII. In July of 1942 the Stalingrad Battle was began and it lasted till January 31 of 1943. The city was completely destroyed but the Army of Fascist Germany couldn't break the Russian Army defense line in front of Volga River. After the victory in the battle the character of the war was changed and day by day Russian Army freed territories occupied by German troops. In spite of the city was completely destroyed it was fully renovated. But of cause now you can't see any historical building here, but mostly buildings of 60-70s of XX century. Since 1961 the city has a name Volgograd (relates with Volga River name). |
