  • There is a lake almost every 5 kms on Highway 17, which takes you from Lively to Sault St Marie. The best of which is Simon Lake.

Simon Lake is located west of Lively in the Graham township. The closest town is Naughton.

There is a conservation area on the lake. The ‘Simon Lake Conservation Area' consists of walking trails and picnic area.

Off The Beaten Path: Simon Lake - equally good for kids and adults

  • We found Simon Lake to be safe for children as there was a play area for them and the lake waters were shallow so they could really enjoy splashing water.

The adults went out for canoing and hiking on the trails. While hiking alongside the major road (but remaining within the conservation area) and then going on the other side of the lake, we found heavily forested area with a panoramic view of the lake from that side. However, while forest slowly decended on the lakeshore, we found some rocks quite slippery.

  • About 100 kms before Sudbury, one can see Highway 69 pass over the French River. Cars can be parked in the adjacent parking lot and a long hiking cum trekking trip can be made on the tracks following the river.

The hike on the top of the mountains overlooking the river in the ravine below offers many picturesque scenes.

However, black flies and mosquitoes can easily turn children restless during a photography session.

Off The Beaten Path: Crossing the river through a suspension bridge
  • Tip Rating:
  • Using the suspension bridge for crossing French River was a fun part of the hiking trip.

Crossing the shaking bridge segregates the brave from the timid.

Off The Beaten Path: Watch French River from the suspension bridge
  • Tip Rating:
  • While hiking along French River through the thick forest further downstream was our dream, we resorted to viewing most of the area through the suspension bridge.

Off The Beaten Path: Yet another lake
  • Tip Rating:
  • 3 kms from Simon Lake, we found another lake on right side of the Highway. There were many families picnicing in the area.

The main feature of this lake was the gushing waters of the river feeding the lake that could be seen for hours.

A very nice account of your adventure trip to Sudbury! I hitch-hiked past it in 1970 but have never been back. Suspension bridges are always fun, and I'm glad you enjoyed the one you found. Great sounding hotel too!
