In the picture above, American Falls appear in the foreground, a portion of Horseshoe Falls with shower clouds and buildings on the Canadian side appear in the far background
Questions intentionally or unintentionally seeking to compare Niagara Falls as seen from NY State of USA and Ontario province of Canada are often posed on Travel Forums here on VT. I have been frequently responding to them. Since my family and I visit Niagara Falls often, I thought why not create pages on NY's Niagara Falls State Park to show how the two sides look. To summarize:
1. NY side can be seen in one day from early morning to dusk. Canadian side has too many natural and man-made attractions stretching for miles that need more than 3 days to see.
2. Views of the Horseshoe Falls and American Falls are better from Canadian side, but the experience of these two Falls from US side is much more up and close and at a personal level. In the State Park, you can actually stand right by the falls.
3. Hiking on the US side, especially in the State Park is easy with many picturesque views of the rapids, falls, and Canadian side.
4. One can actually see the calm waters turning into raging rapids in the State Park.
5. Island hopping in the State Park has its own fun.
The Goat Island constitutes a substantial portion of Niagara Falls State Park. It is here that we spend most of our time hiking, photographing, shopping, and enjoying picturesque spots.
Ideal spot to start the trip would be from Parking Lot P1 on the mainland in the northeastern side of the park. However, during an American long weekend, we found that the park got crowded and closer parking lots P1 and P2, located on the northwestern corner of the Goat Island, were 100% filled. We had to drive all the way to the southern corner of Goat Island to find parking.
We crossed the Rainbow Bridge (far centre) from Canadian side (buildings on far left). Crossing the Bridge on foot offers beautiful scenery.
Lot of people go on the Observation Tower (far right), which we did not. The American Falls (centre right) can be seen from both northeastern and northwestern ends. A hike from the mainland over a Pedestrian Bridge on to the Goat Island enables you to do that.
An overlook (bottom right) enables you to have a clear view of the Cave of the Winds and falling waters of the American Falls.
You can also watch Maid of the Mist (centre left) boarding passengers and plying on the rough waters from several platforms.
Another thing that we enjoyed - watch the activities on Canadian side, especially the Niagara Parkway (centre left above the Maid).
- Pros:Easy to hike, island hopping, rapids, falls,
- Cons:State Park can get very busy during long weekends
- In a nutshell:Experience of falls and rapids at personal level

nice collection of photos and tips for the Big One!
This is a really good page about Niagara Falls. Excellent photographs and good descriptions. It's been since 1975 since I've been there.
Salam, Hope we can have that opportunity of visiting here as well. Thanks for inviting us.
Hi Faiza It's nice to see the Falls from the American side eh . You did a great job making a nice page Lori & I look forward to meet you in two weeks
Faiza, in addition to your excellent suggestions and informative tips, I enjoy looking at your pictures: you and your family always appear to be happy. I can tell you guys enjoy your vacations.
Thanks for pointing out your recent visit to these wonderful falls. I haven't been there since the 1970s, when I was a kid!
