The name Paternoster comes from the story of some Portugese sailors who were shipwrcked on the wild cost, but saved by the village fishermen, and so recited lots of 'Pater Nosters' or Our Fathers. Quite how a Portugese sailor would know the Dutch for Our Father iI'm not quite sure .. But having seen the size and power of the waves that come crashing on shore, even in summer, I can well understand their gratitiude.
The village is on the Atlantic west coast, about 150km north of Cape Town and sandwiched between ugly strips of housing development at Langebaan and Britannia Bay. It still maintains its charm, with a small number of excellent b and bs and a great fish restaurant right on the beach. The walk south from the village, round the point with the light house, is full of surprises, from deserted sandy coves to a sealion colony - take binoculars! |
