Preconceived ideas of Norfolk Island are usually of that classic picture overlooking the convict settlement remnants. It is an historical island you will be led to believe and that image will be true. Two failed convict settlements supplanted by people who were desperate to leave their island yet, some who did that left Norfolk and returned from whence they had come, Pitcairn, another island with a chequered history even in modern times.
Yet there's another history that most overlook, and that is the geological one. I stumbled upon it while going on a fishing trip. We happened to launch from Cascade Bay (site is dependent upon the weather) and just a kilometre into our journey we encountered a fantasy land of stunning rock formations, the like of which I had never seen close up.
It so impressed me I insisted on dragging my partner out to have a look a few days later and even Rosemarie was amazed.
As for the raised finger well, everyone you passed in your car raised at least one finger, sometimes two. This was in a manner friendly, not as you may have suspected!
You also left your car and house open. In fact, we didn't even have a key to our accommodation. It's that sort of place.
