Getting TO/AROUND: When travelling from Naples to Rome or vice versa, be prepared that you may be in for more than an ordinary ride. For starters, during the busy season - BOOK a seat; unless, of course, you don't mind joining the other sardines in the corridor.
If you have luggage and look like a tourist when boarding at Napoli then chances are you will be approached by men, some in proper railway uniform, who will courteously offer to help you with you bags.
"How considerate", you may think, just before they hit you for a 5 Euro tip. Hard, as pleading is a lifestyle in this town.
When on the train, if you haven't booked, the first carriage you come to will be the least crowded. I was amazed when I went for a walk from our two thirds full carriage to the buffet car to find most other carriages were full to overflowing, and this in the off season.
The trains run frequently and the trip only takes just over two hours so it's not the end of the world if you don't get a seat but perhaps these tips may help you.
