| The almost Gothic-like Lago d'Iseo |
On the extreme right of this picture there's a light patch. That's the tunnel I recently passed through. What is the lake like? Following is the description I sent back home in my emails: "Improbable roads climbing seemingly vertical cliffs to housing and, above the housing, churches. At times forested, at other times rent by ghastly quarries, the place is an amazing contrast. The lakeside road of 1,000 bends is always within metres of the shore, whether in a tunnel, overhung by a cliff face, zig-zagging through towns or simply meandering beside a park. The snow capped mountains on the opposite shore (and, I suspect, above me) are partly obscured by an inhabited island called Monte Isole at whose summit is a church and, while I am conducting photography, the bells peel out, their echoes skimming the lake's rippled surface before the bong reaches my ears. A catamaran makes an appearance, the only craft to venture from the many marinas astride the D'Iseo waters, the main colour being provided by cyclists, scores of them, many solo but some in bunches, out training for the upcoming season." Thus my trip along the shores happened. |
