Gateway to somewhere | Huskisson - put yourself in the picture |
Huskisson has been labelled by some as the gateway to Jervis Bay. I think it would better be desribed as a base for Jervis Bay, which also happens to be pretty much where it is situated, i.e. at the furthest extremity from the ocean of Jervis Bay. It's interesting to reflect that, though this was once a key naval base, it's usage as a port never amounted to anything though that was its original intention. Wool was all the rage in the early 19th century and a road was hacked by convicts from Braidwood on the southern highlands to transport the valuable fleece to Huskisson so it could be shipped to Sydney. A town was planned but, nothing happened much for nearly thirty years and Huskisson's commercial development potential was never realised until the advent of tourism. This idyllic location these days draws thousands of tourists to an area that is much given over to National Parks and Wildlife. In fact, any access to the southern area of the bay will cost you a minimum of $10. |
