It doesn't happen very often these days, becoming quite rare really but, in 2005 I happened to be there in late winter when the cane fires burned yet again. With best practice attitudes changing the way farming is done most sugar cane growers don't burn their crop but, in the section between Maclean and Ilarwill, a small village 2kms down the road, you might still get to see the night spectacle and hear the roar as the flames tear across the paddock on an otherwise still night. It's a spectacle not easily forgotten. |
