Newcastle Transportation

Transportation: If you're coming from Sydney...
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': TO,AROUND
    Category: Train
Getting TO/AROUND: If you're coming from Sydney on public transport, do catch the train. It is a scenic trip at times, especially when you are around the Hawkesbury - Gosford area. The wonderful scenes as you descend the sandstone ramparts before crossing the Hawkesbury and then follow the shoreline for many kilometres before coming to Brisbane Waters makes the trip a delight. You can also catch a float plane from Rose Bay which follows the coast and is also very scenic.
There is a reasonable bus network throughout the city and trains to some areas. It's a great town for cyclists also.

    Transportation: Newcastle's Famous Tram
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Bus
Getting TO/AROUND: Newcastle has a tram. Well, it's not really a tram. They haven't run here for decades, more's the pity.
It does look like a tram though. As in a San Francisco body over a bus. Now you're getting the idea. What it actually does is do guided tours and the man is very good. If you want a history lesson and facts on what's happening, this would be my recommendation.

    Transportation: The Stockton Ferry

Getting TO/AROUND: If you're dining at Queens Wharf then you're sure to notice a little ferry docking from time to time.
Now, when I was a lad you either caught that or the punt with your car to get over to Stockton. These days there is no punt. Now that it's gone I have to admit that I miss it, or one of the three that were used.
No, there's a bridge today; actually, two bridges, but they're a fairly roundabout route so the ferry has continued to be a viable option, especially for commuters.
As ferry journeys go, it's not terribly exciting though our granddaughter loved it last month. It also allows you to have a walk out on the interesting northern breakwall that reaches out from Stockton, a suburb partly made from ballast brought out in the sailing ship days of yesteryear, but that's another story.
