Newcastle Hotel Tips by iandsmith Top 5 Page for this destination
Newcastle Hotels: 1,871 reviews and 20 photos
Comfortable, well appointed refurbished rooms in one of Newcastle's busiest suburbs.
Unique Qualities: Though VT list it as Newcastle it's actually in a suburb of Newcastle called Charlestown.
The motel has extensive views over the suburbs with just a glimpse of the distant ocean but is one of the better places to stay in Newcastle.
The pool is ideally situated outside the restaurant to take in all the aforementioned views.
Most weeks they have specials in the restaurant (like free bottle of wine, or a cheaper set course menu) so it's definitley worht a phone call as you may be surprised at how economical the meals are.

Duckenfield delights
This is the type of place if you want to sleep in quiet rural acreage.
Unique Qualities: Berry Park House lies 3.4 km along Duckenfield Rd from Morpeth. It is an attractive single storey homestead built in 1837 with a hipped roof and shady verandah built by tradesmen who emigrated from England who were recommended by the family.
John Eales obtained a grant of 2100 acres in this area in 1823. He grew wheat and constructed some of the colony's first silos for storage. He also raised sheep, bred racehorses (his son developed a prosperous stud), organised the first race meeting in the Hunter Valley in 1833, owned some of the colony's finest racehorses and built a private racecourse. Another 900 m (the second house on the left after the Duckenfield Rd sign) brings you to Berry House, a Georgian mansion built by Eales in 1857 with servants' quarters and a stone rubble barn. It is now open as a bed-and-breakfast,

Accommodation is springing up faster than we locals can keep tabs on. 257 beds are about to be added, many of them at the new Becton building right on the harbour front and the Ibis in the west end of Hunter Street.
Unique Qualities: The Becton will have genuine water views on one side, a great place to see the ships going to and fro.

Noahs is the one beyond the foreground building
There used to be two motels on the northern headland of Newcastle Beach.
Poor planning, in my opinion, has allowed the furthest one to be torn down and replaced with a block of flats.
Noah's is all that remains. May it remain forever although constant wearing by salt is an ongoing problem.
Unique Qualities: Imagine waking up in the morning looking out over the Pacific Ocean, watching the surf roll in as the early morning board riders strut their stuff. The views don't get much better than from the balconies on the ocean side.
There's also a function room which is often in demand for weddings etc.
Address: The Esplanade
Comparison: more expensive than average
Directions: Newcastle Beach
Price: US$40-80

Unique Qualities: This is an average motel in an average suburb. Its location close to the Mater Hospital is probably its greatest asset because most people visiting patients tend to stay here.
Meals are satisfactory if not grand and the rooms are clean with standard three star facilities.

There are two youth hostels at the extreme eastern end of the main street. One is actually located beneath the old nurses quarters (now up-market apartments) and some people I know who stayed there rated it the best hostel they stayed at in Australia.
Unique Qualities: Very handy to beaches and transport.
Address: Hunter St east
Comparison: least expensive
Directions: Not far from Newcastle Railway Station

Though I've seen the rooms I haven't actually stayed here. I have eaten here a few times though.
The place reeks of quality and that comes with a price tag but, if you keep an eye on specials, you can get some really good deals here. If you do, you'll be sure to enjoy it.
Unique Qualities: Its location harbourside has made it Newcastle's premier accommodation. The spacious stylish units are backed up by a quality restaurant (desserts are to die for).
Views down the harbour mean that the frequent harbour traffic is visible from all floors. Newcastle is Australia's busiest port and, on weekends, the local sailing clubs also take to the water, adding some colour to the scene.
