More than just horsin' around | Springtime in horse stud country |
Scone is situated in the Upper Hunter Valley of N.S.W., about 4 hours north of Sydney. As a rural destination it has a little more to offer than most. Its proximity to many interesting natural features makes it a good base. As such you will need a car or utilize the excellent tours through Airlie House Motor Inn who have bus tours set up to take you to the pick of them. Scone is famous for its horse studs, particularly on the eastern side of town and there is even a bronze statue in the town dedicated to that fact as well as the Scone Racecourse and Equine Centre that you can visit. Scone's proximity to Lake Glenbawn State Park makes it convenient for fresh water fishermen. Glenbawn is a man made dam for irrigation purposes and, when full, can carry twice the volume of Sydney Harbour, a common measurement used in Australia referred to colloquially as "Sydarbs". Another destination you should see if you are spending some time there is Barrington Tops. Along with Dungog and Gloucester, Scone is one of the three best towns to base yourself in to view this area. The spectacular views as you climb from the historic (and decidedly rustic) Victoria Hotel at Moonan Flat and up to the dingo gate are memorable to say the least. |
