I wasn't going to Montsoreau but our hosts suggested it was worth a look. Of course, they were talking about the chateau but it is one of a number of villages along the Loire between here and Saumur that can easily fill a day.

Montsoreau is a classified in the 'most beautiful villages of France' listings and is situated between Saumur and Chinon in the Maine-et-Loire department of western France.
Montsoreau is an attractive little village not to be missed if you are exploring the Loire Valley near Saumur. The village is on a quiet upstream stretch of the River Loire near the confluence of the Loire and Vienne rivers and at the base of a small cliff. At this point, the Loire is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is the largest area to be designated a UNESCO site in France.
