Far away, to the east, in the Archipelago rises the islandic ridge of Amorgos..
Although it lies in the middle of the open sea, its shape literally obscures the horizon to the traveller coming from the west on his way to the Eastern Aegean. The Turkish admiral Barbaric conquered the island for the Ottoman Empire in the beginning of the 16th century. Amorgos gained its independence in 1823 and the monastery in Chora founded the first Lyceum in free Greece.
