Sankt Goar is one of many villages in the Loreley Valley and like every town along the Rhine is unique in its own way. This typical German village is named after a monk that settled south west of today’s St. Goar village, seeking to spend his life in prayer. Soon his isolation was interrupted by pilgrims and he even was offered a position of Bishop of Metz, but refused it. After his death a Church was built over his tomb but the legend says that his body was never found, the vault appeared to be empty when opened, and the Saint’s remains have ever been found. Besides the tale behind the town’s name, there’s a cuckoo clock, St. Goar’s pride and joy, there’s Loreley saga, and of course wine. A nice place to spend a few hours, while traveling along the Rhine. |
