My visit to Cuenca was very well planned, or so I thought. I knew I want to see the famous hanging houses, the old city walls, and of course to visit Ciudad Encantada. But, after seeing all the places I have marked on the map I came across something I didn't even dream I'd see. A huge, beautiful, touching Easter procession - the one that so far I've only seen in movies. On the day I came to Cuenca the weather was everything but friendly to me, but it didn't prevent me from standing on the main square for 2 hours under pouring rain and enjoying the great show. Cuenca is not a big city. It cosists of both old and new/ modern parts and the tourists like myself mostly explore the Old City. Be prepared to climb many stairs. Sure there are busses running all the way to the top, but on the day I came to the city all the roads were blocked, so I didn't have the luxury of a bus ride. However, the experience was unforgettable. |
