Mocambo Cafe and Beer Bar: Parsi Food Restaurant!!!

Restaurant Name: Mocambo Cafe and Beer Bar
The restaurant is a very famous place for Parsi food during lunch hours and is basically a beer bar where a bottle of 750 ml of any brand of beer is priced at Rs.65 and a pint for Rs.45 only. A small place with two levels for seating about 50 persons in all, it is generally full at all times!!! Comparatively a very cheap place considering the location in the business district in the heart of Mumbai!!!
Favorite Dish: Chicken/Mutton Dhansak which is a speciality dish of the Parsis in Mumbai!!! Also other Parsi dishes, continental dishes like Fish fillet, French fries and grilled sandwiches which are very good!!! Chinese dishes also available. Try the custard for dessert and also the pot tea is unlike the tea you get in almost all other restaurants with milk added to it!!!

Restaurant Name: Jimmy Boy Family Restaurant
Generally very good Parsi food and especially good Parsi Wedding feast food called "Lagan nu Bhonu" served on a banana leaf like in most Parsi weddings in traditional style!!! Try it for a change of taste from the normal Indian food!!! It's different and you'll like it too!!!
Favorite Dish: Patra ni machhi (steamed Pomfret fish in green chilli chutney and wrapped in a banana leaf). Delicious fish speciality dish of the Parsis!!! Always served at any Parsi wedding feast!!! Jerdaloo Salli Boti (chicken with dried apricots and fine grated fried potato chips). Very delicious chicken "boti" (boneless chicken pieces) cooked in brown gravy with "jerdaloo" (dried apricots) and topped with a finely grated "salli" (potato chips finely grated and fried) to be eaten with either bread or chappatis. Tastes very good and is a dish that is served usually at Parsi wedding feasts!!!

Restaurant Name: Cafe Mondegar
Cafe Mondegar (Where you can mix music with beer!!!) is one of the loveliest old world charm places still left in Mumbai after the original Irani resaurants all closed down so to speak and this was a new 'avatar' for the old place with a juke box and old world style that cannot be replicated anytime!!! Mario Miranda (the famous cartoonist) has done some nice murals on the walls from his cartoon themes and they represent Mumbai as seen by him!!! It still has a lot of things like the menu slid under the glass table top and the juke box belching out musical numbers at the drop of a coin!!! The food is continental and Indian and is good to taste and with big helpings too!!! Beer is available in bottles, cans and as well as on tap too!!! Fantastic atmosphere and cool place to hang out for a late night or an early breakfast which is one of the good choices to eat for a early morning before you head out to the Elephanta caves from Apollo Bunder!!!
Favorite Dish: The breakfast menu has a lot of choices for a fixed price and it serves a good indian or continental breakfast with fresh fruit juices and tea or coffee!!! Good food at good prices!!! The lunch and dinner is also a mix of continental and indian food with a choice of vegetarian or non-vegetarian cuisine!!!

Restaurant Name: Tea Centre.
The best place to have the best tea in town!!! It serves a lovely breakfast menu as well as lunch and dinner but the main thing in this place is the TEA!!! There are so many different varieties that you will find it difficult to choose and pick from the scores of different types available!!! From flavoured teas to the best orange pekoe teas that you can get this side of town!!! Available in tea pots meant for two or six depending on the number of people drinking!!! Iced tea flavours available too!!! You can buy the tea at the tea shop outside the restaurant too!!! There is a poster explaining the whole tea making process for your information too. Teas from different tea gardens like Assam, Darjeeling, Nilgiris and Kashmir are available in different flavours and types too, so take your pick!!! I'm sure you will enjoy atleast one of them!!! A lot of other pastries and snacks available throughout the day and special lunch and dinner menus are also worth trying out for some special Indian or continental cuisine!!!

Restaurant Name: Hotel Sindhudurg.
Gleaming stainless steel table tops with three levels of seating in an air conditioned setting and some very fast service with very helpful staff to explain the ingredients used to make the different dishes to our foreign guests!!! Not too expensive for the quality as well as quantity of food served!!! Located in a small lane off the busy Dadar residential area.
Favorite Dish: Solkadi has to be it but it is not a dish as it is only a drink or something like a curry but can be drunk from a glass!!! Delicious if eaten with plain rice too as it is sweet, spicy and tangy!!! Made of coconut and kokum mixed together with a paste of coriander, green chillies, garlic and ginger to taste. The seafood is something that is special as it is from the coastal area that this place is famous for it's cuisine. We had the mackerel and pomfret along with some king prawns too. We also ordered the fish thali so it comes with a curry, some vegetables, rice and some solkadi too along with chappatis or wadas (like a puri).

Restaurant Name: VEGETARIAN & "THALIS"
This place serves only Gujarati Thalis so there is no choice in ordering what you want but you can select what you want in the thali once you get all the items in it and take more of what you like most amongst the seven different things they offer on your plate in small bowls that make up your thali. The service is unlimited food that is kept on being served to you regardless of how much you have eaten and unless you tell them to stop they will keep on serving you and keep all the bowls full. The place is airconditioned and nicely done up with a lot of old brass pots and artefacts on the walls. Great food and nice ambience with six to eight people all waiting to serve you all the different items continuously till you can have no more!!! Cooked in a very hygeinic way and served in shining stainless steel thalis you are pampered with a lot of good food till you are ready to drop dead with all the good food in your stomach!!! At Rs130 per thali it is a very good priced offer for someone who lives to eat or loves to eat!!! The timings are from 11am to 3pm for lunch and 7pm to 10pm for dinner (Closed on Sunday evenings). All Thaker Bhojanalay tip pictures courtesy: Navinkurian2002@VT.
Favorite Dish: There is only one thing you can order here ..... the Thali!!! It is a plate with a lot of different small bowls with all the different types of dishes served one after the other and kept on being served till you protest and say no!!! The serving is unlimited and continuous so you really have to tell them to stop very firmly if you don't want to waste the food in your plate. There is a lot of vegetables and dal varieties along with the chapati, phulkas, jowar and bajra rotis besides the rice and khichdi that you can try from and then take more once you know which you like or have them all till you are full!!! A glass of buttermilk is also served. There is a sweet dish selection as well with atleast four to five different sweet dishes like Shrikhand, Rasmalai, Rasgolla, Gulab Jamun and you can choose what you want. The water is only served from mineral water bottles. The place has a small dining area so not too many tables out there so come early if you don't want to wait in queue to get in.
