Bintan, is the largest of 3,200 islands in the Riau archipelago and the third largest of 27 provinces in Indonesia.
It is located just 45 kilometres south-east of Singapore and is easily accessible via a 45-minute ride on a high speed catamaran from Singapore's Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal.
As soon as you get out of the Bintan Ferry Terminal you will be greeted with this giant eagle or is it a Garuda (funny, garuda in Swedish actually means "frog").
The island has a population of about 200.000 with a mixture of cultures like Malay, Bugis, Chinese and the Orang Laut (sea people). Being very close to the equator, it has a tropical climate throughout the year, with temperatures ranging from 21° to 32°, with an average of 26° Celsius.
There are several other places to go to in Bintan like, Pulau Penyegat (for fishing), Tanjung Pinang (for shopping), Tanjung Uban (mainly a sea port for oil storage) and Trikora Beach (the most popular beach on the east coast).
