"Crowsnest Pass" Blairmore by Darby2

Blairmore Travel Guide: 20 reviews and 34 photos

For the purpose of clarification, the town of Blairmore along with Frank, Coleman, Hillcrest and Bellevue comprise the Municipality of Crowsnest Pass. The chief occupation in the past, up until the mid-70's was coal mining. All of the mines are now shut down. It was very dangerous mining here...the coal seams were at all sorts of weird jumbled angles and cave-ins and other disasters such as that in Hillcrest mine (Canada's worst mining disaster with 189 lives lost) made mining here a forbidding task. The only mineral activity still here is sour gas production with a large plant near Coleman.

This is the famous Burmis tree...it's a limber pine that grew for centuries ( 740 years to be exact) on this bare rock near Burmis, distorted and contorted by the continuous fierce winds that often blow with hurricane force through the pass. It died more than 30 years ago but it still stands (with a few supports) as a symbol of the longevity, determination and persistence of the people who live here.

It's one of the most photographed trees in the world!

Love that Burmis Tree. I think planting a tree for Berni would be a really lovely gesture.

Great pictures, Dave. Wonderful idea about the tree for Berni - very much a lasting tribute to a woman's who memory will be with her friends forever.
