Kluane Lake

by Darby2 - last update: Oct 19, 2002

Largest Lake in the Yukon

Kluane Lake, south end
This magnificent lake covering nearly 300 square miles is in the southwest corner of the Yukon and lies adjacent to the Alaska Highway for most of its length. Fed mainly by the massive glaciers of the Kluane and St. Elias mountains, the lake has a deep turquoise blue colour because of the microscopic rock flour suspended in the water.

The Slims River which enters the lake at the south carries millions of tons of glacial silt and sediments into the lake and creates a large delta often looks like a river of liquid cement during run-off periods.
