Red Deer lies about halfway between Edmonton and Calgary on Highway 2. It's a pleasant little city of about 60,000 serving the district in all directions. 92 km to the west is Rocky Mountain House on the David Thompson Highway and beyond that, Nordegg and the Rocky Mountains in Banff National Park.
To the east of Red Deer and slightly to the south are the famous Badlands of Alberta which includes the town of Drumheller , home of the Royal Tyrell Museum which has the most incredible displays of dinosaur fossils and interpretive centre.
Red Deer is home to Safety Boss Inc., one of the world's greatest teams of industrial firefighters. They were involved in extinguishing most of the hundreds of oilwell fires that were set during the Gulf War in Kuwait.
One of the biggest blowouts in recent Alberta history ocurred in 1982 near Lodgepole when a large sour gas well blew. It spewed deadly hydrogen sulphide for more than a week before it caught fire on Christmas Eve. It took more than 2 months before it was finally tamed. The flame shot more than 600 feet into the air and was visible from Edmonton more than 110 km away.

Interesting stories about both Francis and the oil field blow-outs! Red Deer is indeed well-positioned for reaching some great tourist destinations!

I don't know...I didn't find any places to stay in or near Red Deer. I suppose if I had stopped it would've been easier?? I also don't eat pork so YAY!!! for Francis!!! Long live the Porkers!!!
I wonder how they know how old that tree is... I know you can cut a tree in half to count the rings but that would kill it. We have creasote bushes in Palm springs that are 10,000 years old..... If you believe that..
