I used to live in Vancouver. Here is one of my shots of a huge bull orca (killer whale) in Seymour Narrows north of Campbell River, B.C. It had been tossing around a large sea lion like it was a rag doll. The dorsal fin on this whale is about 7' high!
Seymour Narrows is the home of Ripple Rock, a marine navigation hazard in the centre of the channel. It was dynamited in 1958 with the largest non-atomic explosion ever set off in North America when 1375 tons of high explosive was planted in shafts inside the rock. The current is still very strong here during tide changes with gigantic whirpools and eddies.
Captain George Vancouver described Ripple Rock in the late 1700's as... "one of the vilest stretches of water in the world."

I would like to get back here another time. I was never lucky enough to see an Orca. Fantastic city and island. It must be a great place to enjoy nature.
