Pleasant country scenes, quiet little coves and beaches, a relaxed lifestyle, little shops, people greeting people...that's the San Juans in a nutshell. Nobody hurries here, even if you miss the ferry there's always another one coming.

Steeped in a colourful history, the San Juans was the site of the last military conflict between ithe British and the Americans in the so -called Pig War of 1859, which began when an American settler Lyman Cutler on San Juan Island shot and killed a hog which kept invading his garden. The Joint military occupation lasted 12 years before Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany settled the dispute in 1872. Many of the historic building still stand while others have settled into the soil and disappeared. There are several interesting cemeteries as well.
