I lived in Addis Ababa from 1973 until 1978. It was the most memoriable place of my life. I went to school at the American Community school. I also had friends at the Sanford School, which was a British school. I lived in the old Airport area next to the Zambian High commission. I remember going to the American Embassy every Wednesday or Thursday night and watching movies there. It was very nice. We had all these kids from different diplomatic cores who all gathered together at the Embassy and had a great time. Funny that I remember, there was generally a rift between the Francophone and anglophone countries...but we all lives in peace when we could.

Addis Ababa, is a very beautiful place. They have a nice Italian club and there is the "Marakato" [market] where you can but lots of things. Addis is very Italian influenced. They have a bowling alley as well, easy to find upon asking the locals. Plenty of grapes and very tasty. Most of the weekends are spent at house parties by both expatriate and diplomats; or the Hilton is a favourite hang out place. Try avoiding getting into a fight with any of the locals, as I found out once that the guy I picked on was an Army guy and he went and got some more soldiers, thank GOD that we had a driver who drove away pretty fast.

Be safe and have a great time in Addis. It is worth a visit.
