The history and science stuff I didn't know Ayia Napa is one of those strange places that has evolved and changed it's character beyond all recognition over the past 20 years. The change has to be seen and experienced to be believed. This once sleepy fishing village is now acknowledged as on of the hottest clubbing spots in Europe. It vies with Ibiza for the position of club capital of the med. The primary reason as with many countries has been war and politics. In Cyprus the tradition tourist resorts, along with most of the wealth was in the North of the island. The south was basically an agri-based economy. The locals eking out what ever level they could from farming and fishing. All of that changed in 1973 when Turkey invaded the north of the island as part of a centuries old debate over control between Greece and Turkey. As a result and with the involvement of the U.N the North of the Island was annexed leaving the south with a very basis economy. The Greek Cypriots have worked hard over the past 30 years to build their economy, a sizeable part of this is now tourism thanks to resorts such as Ayia Napa and Paphos. But enough of history and politics! |
