    • You will see many boat trips along the river Lagan (Belfast’s main river) advertising Alligator spotting. Naturally many tourists get the impression that these beasts will be both huge and plentiful.
    Alas the river Lagan is not a European version of the Florida everglades. You are unlikely to see more than half a dozen gators in a two hour trip and even these are unlikely to be more than three feet long. This is normal for the European alligator, but a quarter the size of their American cousins.
    ‘Expectation management’ is the order of the day.

    Be warned though. They still can still give a nasty bite and due to their compact size and tree climbing abilities, they can be very difficult to spot.

     Though very nice, Belfast Lough, Northern Ireland mostly resembles the lake in that photo nil. While hills do rise up not far from the lough, Belfast Lough lies at the immediate coast of a flat land basin.
