Budapest was quite an interesting city to me. I was surprised by how modern it was on one hand, and yet you could still feel her ancient roots and you are constantly reminded around every corner of the times she survived during the communist era.
Full of dichotomies, there was always something unexpected lurking around the corner. A mirrored glass hotel sitting on the ruins of an ancient wall, a sign warning not to anchor here..... 100 yards from the Danube by parked cars, the American embassy facing a monument to the greatness of the USSR and her military. You can find ancient baths used over a millenia ago, then get on the oldest subway in continental Europe and emerge amongst the thriving competition of wireless phones and internet cafe's.
While I knew Budapest was the capital of Hungary, I was not expecting the modern world to have so thoroughly settled itself into such an old city.
Here's a pic to keep you going for now.... |
