Haoxuan in front of the Buddhist Temple
Before I left the States for this trip, I told some Chinese friends I was going to Liaoyang. They told me not to go there as it would not be an interesting place. This made me a bit apprehensive. As it turned out I had a wonderful time for three days there. I was the guest of Zhang yu and Xia Peng who showed me the city. My purpose for going to Liaoyang was to learn about Chinese Infant Massage from Zhang Yu. I learned much and was kept entertained by their 5 year old daughter who is a wiz at English.
I saw Baita "White Tower" and entered the newly built Buddhist Temple. I was taken to a restaurant that made the best roasted lamb shoulder imaginable.
City in transition

Changes

Liaoyang is presently plagued by rising unemployment and the accompanying crime that is seen in many cities of the industrial north. But there is also a strong spirit of finding new solutions. There is lots of development going on. The river running through the city is being renewed as a scenic walk. In the morning older people can be seen exercising on the equipment installed along the river. Young women wear the most out rageous American styles and even sport tattoos.

While the young people mimic American celebrities and movies, the middle aged and older appear very conservative. It is quite a mix.
There is lots to see in Liaoyang and many good restaurants to enjoy. I was mostly busy learning Xiao Er Tuina "Chinese Infant Massage" and did not see many of the sights. I did get to watch the childrens Gungfu class one evening. I hope I can get back soon.
