Ringstrasse: Parliament building

  • This monument/statue is very beautiful in my opinion. I didn't go inside the building because I didn't have enough time, but it would be worth looking into whether or not they allow people to wander around inside or if they have public tours.

    Ringstrasse: Votivkirche
  • Tip Rating:
  • I wondered about the outside of this church because the lower half is very dark (black) and then all of a sudden it becomes white towards the top, is this a result of pollution or what? Did the workers begin to clean the top and then just stop? What is the deal? Anyway, we spent around 20-30 minutes inside this church, it was interesting. Sometimes the not-so-well-known churches can be just as or more interesting than the big cathedrals. We started our tour of the Ringstrasse with this church. A good place to start I think.

Hofburg: In der Burg - Internal court of the Hofburg
  • Tip Rating:
  • The internal court of the Hofburg known as In der Burg.
Walking around the Hofburg was very interesting. Interesting statues like this one of Emperor Francis I, and decorative buildings with sculptures and cool looking architecture. The apartments of the Amalienburg and the Schweizerhof (Swiss courtyard) are here. The Schatzkammer (rooms of the imperial treasure) are also worth a visit. We spent around 1.5 hours looking at the treasury, they give you an audioguide for it. The Reichskanzleitrakt (Imperial Chancellery) was at one time the headquarters of the Imperial Court, the principal authority of the Holy Roman Empire. The imperial apartments of Emperor Francis Joseph are considered to be the most interesting parts of the wing.

    Karlskirche & Karlsplatz: The Karlskirche
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Karlskirche is absolutely stunning!!! My second favorite church in Europe. Wonderful exterior and scrumptious interior. If you have spiritual interests and enjoy looking at beautiful art then you could probably spend an hour inside and out of this church.
It's just beautiful! The exterior is very very very cool looking!

    Hofburg: Hofburg
  • Tip Rating:
  • Several buildings and monuments make this large royal area. The royal treasury is located here (Schatzkammer). Several museums are located inside the main building. One can also visit the apartments of the royalty here. Like most European historical buildings, the artwork of the exterior is so beautiful. I spent a lot of time just making observations of the sculptures on the buildings.

  • Huge gothic church right in the middle of most of the Vienna sights. I liked this church because they were saying scriptures in German over the loudspeakers. Since Europeans don't really attend these churches anymore, that is what every visited church should do in their own language (present the gospel).

Things To Do: Vienna's History of Art Museum
  • Tip Rating:
  • Vienna's History of Art Museum (Kunsthistoriches Museum)
In addition to the showstopping artworks of various periods (Egyptian antiquities, objects dating back to the ancient Greek, Etruscan & early Christian periods up to early Middle Ages & works by Raphael, Rembrandt & Reuben to name a few) no expense was spared in the construction of the interior. The museum itself is a work of art. Best of all, there is an elegant - my wife says 'gorgeous' - cafe located in the center of the museum where you can have a great meal, or just great coffee and dessert - at great prices!! It's the perfect place to rest after taking in all the art.

    Schönbrunn: Schoenbrunn Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • A beatiful palace and grounds. I love the bright yellow exterior and of course the interior is loaded with luxerious furniture and paintings, etc. Maria Teresa (1717-1780) lived here during the Hapsburg empire. It is mostly of the baroque and rococo style. It is worth a good days visit with the grounds included. We also visited the zoo for the sake of our two small kids, they really enjoyed that. The grounds behind the palace are loaded with beautiful flowers and other landscape items.

Directions: We actually took the subway. I forget the stop, but once you are in Vienna it is easy to see where you need to get off to walk to the palace.

Great page! Many things I didn't see while I was there. Need to go back there someday, 'cause I still need to see all those things I missed.

Okay, if Karlskirche is your 2nd favorite, what's #1? Sounds like you found a great deal on lodging.
