Outside Rome: Oval fountain in the Villa d' Este

  • Oval fountain in the Villa d'Este. A cool, shady place to relax and see some beauty of what God has created (water & plantlife) and man has made (fountains). I believe there are some tables to sit down and eat a sandwich/snack. We sat right next to the fountain on the left side on the concrete edge.

  • The Organ Fountain at Villa d'Este. It used to play music on a water-powered organ but doesn't anymore. I found the statues on the fountain very interesting. Gives a superb view of the area below!

  • View of the Spianata delle Peschiere pool from the Organ Fountain at the Villa d'Este. We all had a great time feeding the fish old bread. They would come right to the surface and eat the bread, some even jumped around. Our kids laughed and laughed.

Parks & Gardens: Rome zoo in Villa Borghese park

  • Isn't he adorable? There is a zoo at the northeast end of the huge Villa Borghese park. There is a fun little playground inside the zoo. Not much for food choice inside though, make sure you have already eaten or bring some snacks with you. This zoo is only worth it if you have children and time.

  • Park near the Palazzo del Quirinale

  • For a quiet relaxing break within the city I would suggest stopping at the parks opposite the Palace Quirinale. The one pictured here is between Ferrara & Della Consulta streets. Very close to the piazza del Quirinale where there is a monument and a nice view of the city, not too far is the Trevi fountain.

  • A fruit mosaic column in the Villa d'Este. This is even off the beaten path within the Villa. I believe it to be near the fontana della Civetta.

  • Villa D'Este. Near the city of Tivoli 31 kilometers east of Rome. A large beautiful garden filled with fantastic water fountains. A great place to get away from the noise of Rome and breathe some fresh air. I would suggest visiting this if you have a week or more in Rome only. In 1550 Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este succeeded to the throne and decided to retire in Tivoli where he immediately began the construction of the villa and gardens.

when you say His return is likely "very soon", is that a relative term? Good tips, disappointing game, yesterday.

Your Rome page is amazing, one of my favorite cities (okay, they're all my favorite!) All the details you provide are very helpful. Great pictures, too.
