hi, okay, before I went to Pto Barrios the first time I nearly freaked as the only info I had was the Lonely Planets less than tempting account, buut there is a lot more to la tierra de dios than meets the eye!
Food for instance! pto Barrios is one of the few places in Guatemala offering tortillas de harina- and they are good, especially if you´ve just come off the Litegua Bus from Guatemala City or from a trip to the beach with one of the lanchas. the best are found in los coquitos or pepin burger, or just try on of the numerous comedors which are scattered around the "town".
The best place for a cool gallo (beer) has to be Safari the best bar/restaurant in barrios. beeing actually built over the see you can watch the local garifuna boys pulling in the days catch or dancing the punta, which involves moving one´s behind faster than the eye can follow. Another special is always watching mormons dressed in black pants and the obligatory backpack trying to convince some raggadly dressed guatemaltecans that alcohol could possibly be a sin. Or for a chance of actually meeting people whose idea of seeing the world is not meeting other european or north american 20something backpackers in "real authentic" hostels, is to try the barratío! Ever felt like watching a locals when your paying them to be polite! Worth spending a morning! Or rent a moto and spend a couple of hours zooming round the dusty streets and leave town heading up to rio dulce and stop at one of the stalls selling pinas.
