To/from the airport... - Athens
To/from the airport... Airport bus Review

"Eleftherios Venizelos" is accessible via Attiki Odos, another big project of Athens (a 70 km ring of it), a modern motorway with tolls and many exits all around Athens.
The Suburban Rail/metro -given in public on 1/8/2004- is the fastest way to get to the airport or go to the centre of Athens from it (35').
There are six express bus routes: 1) E95 Syntagma-Airport 2) E96 Piraeus-Airport (both of them operate on a 24-hour basis) and 3) E94 Ethniki Amyna metro station-Airport.
Since the summer of 2003 new express bus routes were added: 4) E92 Kifisia-Airport 5) E93 Kifisos bus station-Airport 6) E97 Dafni metro station-Airport.

The tram The Tram Review

At the beginning of the 20th century tramway was a popular transport, but then it was destroyed...
44 years later, the new tram lines link the centre of the city with the southern coastal suburbs. The whole project was ready a few days before the Olympic Games of 2004.

Buses - Athens
Buses Buses Review

The buses is a common public transport in the city. At the end of the 20th century, finally, timetable information in all departure points and designed maps appeared in Athens, something which helps a lot and should be done many years earlier.
Except single tickets, which you can use for 90 minutes in all transport -except the daily ones-, you can also buy a weekly card for all public transport or even a monthly one - if you stay more, there is a yearly one too...
Since June 2005, you can even be inside the sightseeing tour bus and you can see most of the important sights of the city. Easy and helpful!

The station at Kifisou 100 street - Athens

The station at Kifisou 100 street

Intercity buses Long Distance Buses Review

By traveling with intercity buses, you can go everywhere in Greece, something that doesn't happen by using the railway network - which is not so prevalent.
The main station is located at Kifisou 100 str., for the rest of the country.
The stations is housed at an old building. A new, big and modern intercity station must be built...

157 check-in counters... - Athens

157 check-in counters...

The airport El. Venizelos Airport Review

"Eleftherios Venizelos", the airport of Athens, is located about 30 km NE of it. The beginning of operation happened on March 2001 (5 years of construction). It deputized the old fashioned and small airport in Elliniko, which doesn't exist anymore.
The new airport of Athens, too modern and pleasant, has 157 check-in counters. The arrivals level is on the ground, the departures above it (for details about to/from "Eleftherios Venizelos", see the next tip).

Atrium, "Syntagma" metro station - Athens

Atrium, "Syntagma" metro station

Metro... Metro Review

On 29/1/2000 Athenians met for first day their metro system, a big project which was finally true, after enough years of patience... The reconstructions brought to light parts of the city that had been hidden, most of the stations are mini-museums!
Two new lines were added to the old one, Piraeus-Kifisia: line 2 (Agios Antonios-Agios Dimitrios) and line 3 (Doukissis Plakentias-Egaleo). There will be all the time new extensions in the future.
Smoking, eating and drinking are forbidden at all the metro stations (breathing... is allowed).
At the picture, you see a work by George Zongolopoulos at Syntagma station atrium (the biggest one). Art is so visible at the modern and pleasant metro stations...

The Peloponnese station - Athens
The Peloponnese station Train Review

It is near the central railway station, you go there by a bridge. The station had trains to the Peloponnese (2 directions, one to Patra and the other to Nafplio-Kalamata), the southern greater prefecture of Greece. International buses to Albania, Bulgaria and Turkey depart from Peloponnese train station.

The port of Piraeus - Athens
The port of Piraeus Ports Review

It is the biggest port of Greece, one of the most important in the Mediterranean Sea. Piraeus has been the port of Athens for more than 2.500 years. You can go from there to most of the islands of the Aegean Sea - also the ports of Rafina, NW of Athens, and Lavrio (see my page about it) function. There are international services to Cyprus and Israel too.
The port is divided in 5 gates (zones), according to the areas of the islands. You can buy your ticket even at the last minute at the numerous travel agents there, but during the summer (especially for the crowded islands) it would be wise to book it earlier...
