Small and cosmopolitan

The island of Spetses is situated to the entrance of the Argolic Gulf, not far away from Athens. It has an oval shape and a surface area of 22 square km, with a population of about 4.500 people (living basicly in the main town of Spetses).
The island has a cosmopolitan style. Its beaches, with sand or pebbles, are located at beautiful small bays...

Glorious past...

The island has an important historical and religious past. Spetses is the homeland of L. Bouboulina, legendary woman of the greek history. Its most popular festival is the enactment of the battle on 8/9/1822 with the participation of the inhabitants.
Religious festivals are celebrated all year long in many churches and chapels.

The town of Spetses

You can see and learn a lot about it on my Spetses page. Surprises are waiting for you all over the nice town, which, as the whole island, can best be seen by riding a bicycle (transferring a car is forbidden there)...

That was the school that John Fowles taught at. Why he set The Magus on this island. Lovely to see a pic of it.
