THE DRY SALT LAKE

'Chott' means "lakes" and it is dry in the hot season, but it has some water in the winter.
The largest, the Chott el Jerid, covers 5000 square kilometres and lies in the middle of Tunisia, close to the Algerian border.
Chott el Jerid was some thousand years ago part of the Mediterranean Sea.
You can cross the Chott between Kebili to Tozeur.
The part on the eastern side is called Chott el Fejej.

The road from Kebili to Tozeur.

Only 150 km from the Algerian border
