Pierrefonds is a little village near Compiègne , 70 km from Paris , in the old province of Valois , now Picardy.
Before the First World War, the village was known as Pierrefonds-les-Bains thanks to its thermal waters. But the war ended this short period of glory. Today, the quiet village is invaded by tourists came to see its famous castle. So famous that Walt Disney inspired him for ” The Sleeping Beauty”castle.
There are a lot of castles in France, but Pierrefonds Castle is unique. It is an attempt to give birth to ruins destined to fall in oblivion, a happy mixture between Middle Age ruins and Renaissance style.It is the Viollet-le-Duc’s vision about the past |
