Rome is one of my favorite destinations. You heard it before: Rome, one lifetime is not enough. There is so much history, so much legend that the two intermingle leaving no trace and a bunch of passionate tourists, like me.

Even the origin of the city is mystical. I was told the story as a kid, that Romulus and Remo and the shewolf and so on. One just wonders if it is true. I had the same conflict with other "founding myths" like that of Mexico City and the eagle.

Back to Rome, My visit to the city was definitely not long enough, but I enjoyed it to the max. The days I was there, I experienced friendly people, good food, history everywhere, and not a whole lot of English. My phrase book and my Spanish helped me a great deal.

Rome is the capital of the Roman Catholic Church and you will experience this as much of the post-Roman Empire history evolves around the development of the church as the great institution it is today and the struggle of the city to hold the power of the Pope vis-a-vis other monarchs of the time.

Also there was the threat of invasion from numerous barbaric tribes. Many of these did sacked Rome and it is common to hear as a joke that any tribe that amounted to something had to plunder Rome at least a little.

The traces of the empire are everywhere and it is always possible to have a personal guide. They usually stand in front of the attraction or monument offering their services.

The peoples of Rome are nice. They are very friendly and always willing to help. This is of course, based on the ones I met.
