The Hilton is actually on the edge of a higher crime rate area. See my warning section because there are some motels in bad neighborhoods. There are some motels south of Mission Street but I don't know why anyone would want to stay there. As far as where good to stay, there are some motels on Lombard Street that have reasonably good parking. There are buses 1 block away on Chestnut Street for those not renting a car. Chestnut Street is actually an expensive neighborhood even though the houses are not very big.

If one doesn't mind spend a lot for a hotel room, the Grand Hyatt on Union Square is conveniently located to Union Square, on several bus lines, and only a short walk to Chinatown.
